The end result of the offset printing process. - Fuji X100F

Back in November I was asked by the wonderful people at Ernest Journal to head over to Bristol to join them to make a video and shoot some photos of Ernest: Issue 9 being printed. I hopped onto a train from Cardiff and got to work filming and photographing this wonderful process.

Ernest were also printing a special edition for Another Place hotels which I did some work on and you can read more about that here<

We met at Taylor Brothers Printers and I got to work shooting both video and photos of the whole process. Ernest is printed using offset lithographic printing, a process which relays on metal plates being used to print in black, blue, red and yellow, resulting in a full colour final image.

The main task for me was to put together a 60 second video (perfect for instagram) as well as get some photos of the process. Because this was quite fast paced work I shot video with the Fuji XH-1 + 56mm lens while having my Fuji X100T around my neck for some quick stills snaps. This setup worked really well and allowed me to do both at the same time without having to worry about settings.

One thing to look out for when doing kind of work is banding on your footage, this comes from when the frequency of the ambient artificial light is not matching the frame rate of the recording, here in the UK a factor of 50 (so 1/50th sec is ideal) works as most lights (in the UK) work on a frequency of 50hertz, experiment for yourself but this will get rid of that nasty banding on your footage from artificial lights.

Below are some go the photos and the little video I shot, please let me know what you think in the comments below!

Cheers,
