Planning an Iceland Wedding Elopement

I’m getting married!

After proposing to my partner in 2021 we got to work planning our wedding. We decided instead of planning a regular wedding in this country we would hop on a plane and get married in Iceland, somehow, even though my fiancé has never been to Iceland she agreed and the planning started.

On our first-ever date in a little coffee shop in Cardiff we got talking about our various travels and I, of course, couldn’t not bang on about Iceland, a place that I’ve been to 4 times and just can’t get enough of.

I last went to Iceland on a solo trip in 2018, if you’ve not seen it then I’ve done a few blogs about that trip:

Planning the Trip

Planning the actual trip to and around Iceland was an easy task, having driven the ring road before I had a good idea of what to see when and a rough plan of how the trip would go.

Instead of camping like I did last time we’ve rented a camper van as well as booking a few fancy stays at an amazing glass lodge and the Blue Lagoon.

We’re going for 18 days this time, so have added the Westfjords into the plan, a place which I didn’t get to last time and am super keen to visit.

Planning the Actual Wedding Part

We went back and forth with how to do the logistics of the legal marriage in Iceland, and in the pursuit of ease we went for a legal ceremony in the UK and then a ring exchange and vows with just the two of us in Iceland.

It is of course perfectly possible to do the legal bit in Iceland, but we want this day to just be about the two of us, so this way we can focus on each other and really enjoy the moment.

Iceland Wedding Photography

Of course, wedding photography in Iceland is high up on the list of ‘how do we do this’ and with this we also went back and forth with ideas but we’ve settled on keeping the Iceland part of our wedding a very personal affair and will be doing our own photography and documenting the day ourselves.

It’s going to be a fun challenge, but one we’re looking forward to, of course then we will be having professional photos for the party back in the UK, but feel this idea of self-documenting our wedding suits us down to the ground.

More Iceland Blogs Coming…

I’ll be documenting our wedding and the trip itself, so stay tuned for more blogs in the second half of this year.

For now, I hope you’ve enjoyed some of my past shots from Iceland, we’re currently going through the maps and looking back on my photos to pick out all the best spots!

Let me know what you think of our plans below!

Cheers,
Col-
